Thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Paxton House. On this occasion, we took the guided tour and went on the boat trip to the Union Chain Bridge. The tour is excellent – the guide knows her stuff but wasn’t long-winded about it, and told us some entertaining stories. We went at a sensible pace, so we were able to examine items that interested us. We’d been on the boat trip before, but it’s always different and interesting: this time, we saw cormorants, egrets, little grebe and a merganser. Food and drink in the cafe is always good; and they have a dog-friendly room if you don’t want to sit out in the courtyard. We’ve been before to look at the gardens and attend events, but still have to see the exhibitions in the galleries – we’ll be going back soon! NB -the house visit includes a spiral staircase and other steps. There’s a lift at one point, but it would be advisable to ask about access before booking the tour.
We stayed in one of Paxton House’s new glamping pods this autumn and were utterly enchanted. Nestled beside the stately home, forest walks, and the gentle River Tweed, the setting is delightful. The pod itself radiated hygge. Warm, welcoming, and thoughtfully designed for comfort. Crisp mornings, golden leaves, and birdsong made it feel like a storybook escape. The staff were exceptional, going above and beyond to make our stay special. From the immaculate interiors to the peaceful surroundings, everything was perfect. A truly restorative retreat that blends nature, history, and hospitality with effortless charm. We can’t wait to return.
One of the most uplifting stately home visits I have had. In part, this is because I am a Paxton, so my ancestors came from the village of Paxton. Paxton House was in the Home family, so, no relation. The exterior is restrained elegance. The excellent, knowledgeable tour guide took a small group of 20, beginning with the kitchen, processing through the less elegant rooms to the finale of majestic rooms. These last rooms are quite magnificent, with Robert Adam ornament & decoration. I did not have to pay admission as I am a member of Historic Houses. Cafe & shop are VG. VISIT PAXTON HOUSE.
We had the most incredible day celebrating our wedding at Paxton House. The venue was stunning and adaptable. Mel was truly wonderful, no job or idea was too big, small or weird for her! She was down with all our suggestions and committed to making them work. We loved that the venue was so ready to let us make our day specific to us – like bringing in an Iranian chef we loved from London to do the catering and having drinks and canapés by the river. We had ca. 130 guests travelling from all over the world, and everyone were very impressed with Paxton House and the set up of the wedding. We could not have been happier with the whole experience, from start to finish. Thanks to everyone at Paxton for making it such a special day!
Stables Tea Room – Afternoon Tea
OMG what a lovely surprise, more than your usual afternoon tea and I’ve had a few. We sat down and were immediately given a wee china tea cup full of hot soup – delicious, then came the Afternoon tea, we could not believe it, turkey, stuffing and gravy sandwiches, egg mayo, ham and pickle, cheese and pickle, home made sausage rolls, home made quiche, cheese scones, then the desert tower, all manner of goodies as well as scones, jam and clotted cream. Unlimited tea and coffee. We were royally stuffed , the best value for money ever by sheer amount. Anything left we were given take away boxes for so we could enjoy later at home.
Bravo to the cook/ staff unbelievable quality, amount and great service. Book in advance but well worth it. £26 per person and thoroughly worth every penny.
What a lovely little find! Spent more than 3 hours here with my son (6) and husband – den building and playing on the adventure playground. Didn’t even get to look round the house or go for walks, my son was just happy building dens! Lovely cafe too with little kids lunch packs on offer: very reasonable price for us to enter the grounds at £16 for all of us. Friendly staff. Will def be back on our next hols!
My colleagues and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Paxton House, with a truly fascinating and engaging tour from Dr Fiona Salvesen Murrell who was very impressive and passionate when sharing the history of the House and the family, particularly for our research trip Fiona managed to deliver an engaging tour that was relevant to our various research topics and covered the broad history of the building. Fiona and her team should be really proud of the great lengths they have gone to in terms of research, creative methods and funding. I highly recommend visiting the House, the exhibition and the surrounding gardens with a stroll to the nearby Union Bridge.
What an amazing visit to an extraordinary house. The house, furnishings, paintings and gardens are exquisite. You can only visit the house on a guided tour which you can pre-book and is included in the entry price. You will be so close to the treasures inside and able to enjoy them in great detail. Our guide, Carol, was very engaging and knowledgeable. You can walk through the gardens to the Union Chain Bridge too. Highly recommended
If you are in the area of Berwick upon Tweed then Paxton House is a must see destination. I thought I knew about Chippendale the 18th century furniture maker but there is so much more to learn about him here. Lesley our guide was friendly, engaging and extremely knowledgeable about the extraordinary family who built and resided at this lovely house. You won’t be disappointed.
A superlative collection of Chippendale-designed and procured furnishings. Incredibly friendly and welcoming team of people. An excellent guided tour.
