Our History

Paxton House is one of Britain’s finest Palladian houses. Between 1758 and 1795, the finest architects and craftsmen of the Georgian era designed, built, decorated and furnished this home. In 1988, John Home Robertson, established a charity so that everyone can enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of this remarkable house with its extensive grounds and gardens.

The Family
Patrick Home of Billie, commissioned Paxton House. Building began in 1758.
Patrick was the oldest surviving son of an up-and-coming man, Rev. N Home and Margaret Home of Billie.
Patrick was born into this prominent Border family whose members were caught up in the history of the nation and of the region.

Sugar & Slavery at Paxton House
The Paxton Trust is working hard to tell our history honestly. We have spent the last six years working with a number of partners to do this.
We now have a dedicated exhibition in the Old Billiard Room of the house.
Exclusively on our website, we have a detailed trail through the house, highlighting objects connected to slavery.
