June/July/August/September: Monday to Sunday 10:00am – 4:00pm

Accessibility

There is lift access to the first floor of the house. Please inform a member of staff if you need to use the lift. The Courtyard, Stables Tearoom and Gift Shop are all accessible by wheelchair. Please call in advance if you need further information.

Dogs

Dogs on leads are welcome at Paxton House. Dog poo bins are available in the grounds and dogs can visit the Stables Tearoom in the courtyard or the dog-friendly Harness Room.

Please understand that we cannot allow dogs into the main house itself (except assistance dogs).

Food And Drink

Our Stables Tearoom is open daily serving light lunches and refreshments.

Picnics are welcome in designated areas.

Group Tours

We welcome pre-booked group visits of 15 or more people.

Patrick Home of Billie built Paxton House on a new site high above the river Tweed from 1758. He had not long returned from Europe and hoped that he would be able to marry his Prussian sweetheart, Sophie de Brandt.

The Family

Standing in Paxton House’s hall, you’re in the world of Patrick Home of Billie, who built the house from 1758. A member of a prominent Border family, Patrick in herited the Paxton estate and played his part in the region’s rich history.

When Patrick Home built Paxton House in the 1750s, he wanted his new house to have a fashionable setting. Landscape gardens, where an idealised idea of countryside came right to the walls of the house.

Boat Trips

The mighty river Tweed traces the border between Scotland and England for much of its length. You can get on the water at Paxton House by booking a boat trip or stroll beside it on our riverside walks. Learn about the river’s historic salmon netting station, Victorian boathouse and the Union Chain Bridge.

The Waterwheel

Come and see Scotland’s only surviving 18th century domestic waterwheel and watch it in action.

Originally installed to provide fresh spring water to Paxton House, the Waterwheel has been lovingly refurbished with grant money from the Scottish Landfill Communities Fund. It is operated regularly throughout the season by our team of volunteers.
