history

The pair of gate lodges – South and North – were completed around 1758 as part of the building of Paxton House, designed by Scottish architect, James Adam. The later screen with its urns and recumbent lions was commissioned around 1789 by Ninian Home and designed by Thomas Chippendale. We have converted this simple building into a charming small modern cottage which has everything you need for a comfortable independent holiday or a romantic break.

What to Do in the area

Ideally situated on the Scottish English border, South Lodge is the perfect holiday cottage for weekend escapes and longer stays. Part of the historic Paxton Estate, guests have access to 80 acres of the gardens and grounds that surround one of Britain’s finest Palladian houses. The cottage also provides an excellent base to explore both the Scottish Borders, North Northumberland National Park and the coast. The area is famed for its castles, beaches, tiny fishing harbours, historic abbeys and the traditional market town of Berwick-upon-Tweed.
