Description

Listed on Chippendale’s 1774 bill as ‘a large size Shaveing Table with drawers for razors &c a Bottle & Bason compleat – £7.7.0’, this was made for Ninian Home. The double lid opens outwards on hinges to reveal a fitted top with holes for a washbasin and soap cups. It originally had a mirror made to rise on a rack and spring above the basin.

On the left, below the lid, is a long narrow drawer divided up into small storage sections. This had suffered historic damage and was in many pieces. It was repaired and the whole piece conserved in 2018 with funding from Museums Galleries Scotland.

This is a sophisticated piece of Paxton style furniture that looks plain. However, it has multiple drawers and cleverly quartered veneer door fronts that produce a geometric pattern of strongly figured mahogany.
