Description

William Foreman, an attorney in Berwick-Upon-Tweed, was a second cousin of George Home. William inherited Paxton House, Wedderburn Castle, the lands of Billie, and Waltham estate from George. At that point he added the surname Home to his own name.

William successfully claimed for compensation for loss of ‘property’ when slavery was finally abolished in the British colonies. He received £6226 for the ‘loss’ of 247 enslaved people from Waltham. Waltham was sold in 1848 for £2500.

William’s brother, John, had worked as the estate doctor at Waltham in 1801-04. From at least 1817-29, John was owner of L’est Terre estate in Grenada worked by enslaved people.
