Description

This sofa was made for Ninian and Penelope Home for their newly decorated Drawing Room at Paxton House. In 2022, with grant funding from Museums Galleries Scotland, this sofa was conserved to ensure it remains safe to display and to show its original surviving construction methods. We discovered it had only been upholstered twice after the original fabric was fitted; once c.1870, and once in the 20th century. The 19th century fabric has been cleaned and fitted to the firescreen.

The striped cotton calico loose cover was made to replicate those originally supplied by the Chippendale firm to protect the furniture when the family were away. All the original horsehair stuffing has been re-used in the upholstery which now is the correct shape as designed by Chippendale.

We have deliberately not had a final floral silk damask finishing material fitted to this sofa so that the remarkable survival of original materials can be shown.

This piece of furniture was conserved in 2022 with grant funding from Museums Galleries Scotland.
