NG 427 Bequeathed by Lady Murray of Henderland in 1861

Description

Lindsay’s wife, Susannah Charlotte Ellis (nee Long), inherited £2500 (around £327,000 today) from her father Samuel Long (1700-57) of Tredudwell. Samuel had owned 6755 acres in Jamaica and 443 enslaved people.

Susannah had been married previously to George Ellis, the owner of Green Castle estate in Jamaica. He left Susannah an annuity of £1200 p.a. Ellis had owned 536 enslaved people. The total value of Ellis’s estate at probate was £30,347.24 Jamaican currency of which £21,249 currency was the value of enslaved people.

Reynolds used carmine red pigments in the flesh tones without realising it faded rapidly which is why the sitter is so pale.
