Principal Bedroom

This is the largest bedroom in the house but was originally designed by John and James Adam to be the library on their plans of 1756. The wallpaper and fabric furnishings were created during the restoration of the house in 1988-92. They are based upon, but are not an exact copy of, the original surviving decoration. Ninian Home (1732-95) and his wife Penelope (d.1794 in Grenada) commissioned Thomas Chippendale the Elder to furnish this room in 1774-76 with light and pretty soft furnishings and wallpaper. All the furniture (except a washstand near the door) was made by Chippendale.
