The Picture Gallery at Paxton is the largest private gallery ever to be built in Scotland and one of the most ambitious in any British country house. It was designed by the King’s Architect in Scotland, Robert Reid, for George Home. The first designs for the gallery date to 1811 with the build completed by 1814. It was originally conceived to display the art collection of George’s cousin Patrick Home; Nancy Stephens and George Home took great delight in displaying the paintings. Sadly, much of Patrick’s collection was dispersed at auction in 1923 to pay death duties. The National Galleries of Scotland are a partner of The Paxton Trust and over 70 of their paintings are on display in the Picture Gallery.
