Main Staircase

This was the staircase used by family and guests designed for show. A stone spiral staircase connected the servants’ quarters with the reception and bedroom floors in the house. The Ironwork on the staircase was made by an unnamed local, very skilled blacksmith. He also undertook very similar work in at least two other houses which survive, including Wedderburn Castle which Patrick Home owned from 1766. The plasterwork was completed on the main staircase and landing by the highly skilled 18-year-old George Morrison, from Kelso.
