Oval Pier Glass

Chippendale, Haig & Co.
1774
Painted softwood
245F

Description

Commissioned by Ninian and Penelope Home for Paxton House – the couple, their family, friends, and servants must have examined their reflections countless times in this, and the other Chippendale mirrors made for the bedrooms, Dining Room, and Drawing Room.

The oval frame has a beaded inner, fluted middle, and water leaf outer mouldings. The frame is painted white over an earlier pale green. There is evidence of possible original side fixings, perhaps for candle armatures. The oval pier glass was a staple in Thomas Chippendale’s repertoire, most frequently made for bedrooms and dressing rooms.
