Description

This is one of a pair commissioned for this room by Ninian and Penelope Home and was in a slightly better state than its matching pair. Funding from Museums Galleries Scotland enabled this piece to be conserved in 2022. It has been re-upholstered with the silk damask dating to c.1870 that was found under the 20th century covering on the sofa during its conservation. A textile conservator carefully cleaned the damask several times to remove the ingrained dirt.

The sofa had only been upholstered when initially made, then c.1870, and once in the 20th century. The petrol blue damask was attached to the sofa with some cardboard packing which enabled dating from an advert for a firm.

Made of two hinged leaves with plain frames scratch beaded on the inner edge and housing vertically sliding double inner panels, with a small leather pull on the upper rail to raise or lower the screen, raised on short feet that form an extension of the frame.

This piece of furniture was conserved in 2022 with grant funding from Museums Galleries Scotland.
