Clothes press
Description
Commissioned by Ninian and Penelope Home just after they purchased Paxton House with a £2000 down payment derived from profits from enslaved labour, and a £10,000 loan, this is one of the earliest Chippendale pieces in the House.
Inside the upper stage are three surviving sliding trays (out of six) complete with their original Chippendale signature marbled paper. Presses were designed to store clothes folded onto the trays which originally had baize dust covers. This and the other two Chippendale presses would have held the clothes of the Homes and their guests. The West Bedroom and this press were used by George Home when he lived at Paxton.
The door panels were designed to show off the stunning flame mahogany wood derived from the buttresses of the tree, or from where a large branch joined the main trunk.
This press was conserved in 2022 with funding from Museums Galleries Scotland and The Pilgrim Trust.
