Chimneypiece

Chippendale & Haig
c.1774
Painted deal

Description

This is one of seven Chimneypieces designed and carved for Ninian and Penelope Home by the Chippendale firm. Three are firmly identified by their measurements on the invoice from Thomas Chippendale. The others are all identified by identical components to other Chippendale pieces at Paxton.

The crisp and finely detailed carving includes three ribband tied garlands, acanthus flourishes and an oval cartouche, on a moulded lower frame carved with twisting foliage, surrounding marble slips and a hearth opening.
