Description

The Homes (Ninian, Penelope, and Patrick) commissioned the Chippendale firm to make at least twelve (surviving) chests of drawers for their servants at Paxton House and Wedderburn Castle. These are fitted with locks, giving their servants a degree of privacy, which was unusual for the period.

They appear situated in bedrooms and dressing rooms in the 1828 Inventory of Paxton House. The design relates to the pattern in Plate LXXXVI of Chippendale’s Director. When Frederick and Martine came to Scotland from Grenada in the late 1780s, as the enslaved servants of Ninian and Penelope, they may have used this or an identical chest of drawers for their personal clothing and possessions.
