Description

Benjamin’s 1991 book, A Short History of Grenada: New Dimensions, included memoirs of his visit to Paxton in late December 1961 when he stayed with the Home Robertson family.

He described that Mrs Home Robertson, ‘had some years ago bought the Crochu estate in St Andrew’s, and sold it in 1956 after the sweeping hurricane of 1955…. She had never been to Grenada herself… I informed her that Paraclete was no longer an estate, but comprises a number of peasant proprietors… who… now grow nutmeg, cocoa, banana; other fruit crops like organs, grapefruit and avocado pears’.

This painting was conserved in 2022 with a grant from the Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund.
