Open for Visitors
Paxton House and grounds are finally open for visitors from Friday 8 April.
We have not been idle during the five month clear up to repair the damage wrought by Storm Arwen. Paxton is always a hive of activity and the enforced break while the fallen trees were cleared has given us an opportunity to get some new projects underway.
We have new times for tours around the Palladian house, one of the finest and least altered in Britain. You’ll get a chance to explore how the Home family lived in the 1760s, their connections with slavery in the Caribbean and the fashionable objects, furniture and paintings they acquired to beautify their home. And we have fascinating stories of love, murder, slavery, seafaring and scientific achievement to share with you. Book here.
We have a new exhibition which uses Paxton’s outstanding collection of historic costume, displayed in the rooms, to help you step back in time
The winter months in the house are an important time for cleaning and conservation as well as giving our precious interiors a bit of a rest. Some of our outstanding collection of Georgian furniture by Thomas Chippendale has been carefully repaired and conserved by furniture restorer, Fergus Purdy, while items in the equally celebrated collection of Regency furniture by William Trotter received the expert attention of restorer, Tim Phelps.
Outdoors, we have a new partnership with Adventure Northumberland which allows you to book trips down the magnificent river Tweed by canoe, kayak or paddle board. And our regular guided boat trips will be running again in May. Find out more here.
The gardens are already full of colour with a succession of Spring bulbs and the first of the showy azaleas and rhododendrons while in the parkland around the house are massed displays of daffodils. Find out what our volunteer garden team think is our Plant of the Month.
We have doubled the capacity of our Walled Garden Caravan Park. There is now plenty of room for caravans and camper vans to use our lovely grounds as a base to explore Berwick and the Borders or just to enjoy the peace and tranquility of Paxton’s eighteenth century landscape after everyone else has gone home. We have installed a new washroom and toilet block and fitted a solar array to provide renewable power and improve our green credentials. Book for the 2022 season here.
Our spacious marquee is up on the lawn once more and later this summer its unrivalled view down the river Tweed will be complete once more with the re-opening of the restored Union Chain Bridge. If you are looking for a spectacular wedding venue or space for a party to shake off those Covid blues, there are still dates you can book.
We have a new team in the Tearoom which opens for the first time this year on Wednesday 13 April and the Gift Shop has exciting new stock to entice you in from Friday 8 April. We have an exciting programme of events planned for Easter to keep the whole family entertained. Book here. Please remember to be Covid aware – wear face covering indoors, use our hand sanitising stations, pay contactless and book tickets online. We are dealing with a high level of staff shortages because of Covid absences, so please be patient and kind to our staff.
We know that locals and loyal visitors have really missed coming to Paxton this winter to enjoy the space, the Woodland Playground and a chance to encounter nature as well as seeing the onset of Spring in the gardens, so we are delighted to be able to welcome everyone back. We wonder if you’ll enjoy the new open areas and views where trees have gone or whether you’ll notice at all. It is a lot muddier than it used to be, so please bring wellies or walking boots and keep safe by paying attention to the signs. Most of all, please come and enjoy all that Paxton House has to offer.
