Conservation Stories

The Paxton House Trust is responsible for looking after a whole range of historic objects in our collections for the benefit of the general public. We have recently undertaken a series of conservation projects on our costume and our furniture.

Sackback status symbol: Part 1

In Spring 2023 a live event at Paxton House caught the attention of visitors when two University of Glasgow students, Rebecca and Cait, spent a week in the Picture Gallery making a gown from around 1770 using techniques employed by contemporary Mantua makers. The gown in a style likely worn at the time by Paxton House's owner, Penelope Home, is currently on display in the Drawing Room. In two videos, we review the project in detail.
