Our boat trips have finished for the 2017 season, please keep an eye on the website and social media for the 2018 times when we begin the next season.
Netting salmon has taken place on the River Tweed for centuries. The river was divided into dozens of salmon fisheries, known as stations. Each fishery had a hut called a shiel to provide storage space for the fishing gear and accommodation for the fishermen during the season which runs from March – Sept.
Paxton House is one of the last remaining netting stations on the Tweed, and still uses the traditional way of netting using a coble or small boat. The net is rowed out in the coble to form a large semi-circle and then pulled in by hand.
From 2015 netting at Paxton no longer takes place for commercial purposes. The Tweed Foundation in partnership with the Paxton Fishery crew now use the fishery as a research station. The netting takes place purely for scientific and research purposes. The salmon are tagged and released back into the river.
Visitors are welcome to come along and watch the netting and learn about the research taking place.
