Ola Wojtkiewicz, art historian and Senior Curator of 16th & 17th Century Collections at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, considers a number of delightful examples of landscape painting on loan from the National Galleries of Scotland. How did the appreciation of nature and landscape evolve from the early nineteenth century to the mid twentieth century? What were the painting styles which captivated the audiences? What explanations are there for the remarkable explosion of naturalistic landscape painting in nineteenth century Britain?
