Information about the Paxton House boat trips.
The Paxton House boat journey’s last about an hour, heading west upriver under the famous Union Chain Bridge to Horncliffe and the “Black Hole”. The volunteer “skippers” give a running commentary on the history of the local area, the Chain Bridge and the salmon fishing industry. Most trips see a wide variety of birdlife including buzzards, heron and the occasional kingfisher.
The boats run from April to October and are especially busy during the school holiday period, June to August. Due to the tidal nature of the River Tweed, the numbers of sailings are limited to suitable water levels. Paxton House publish the boat trip times a month in advance on their website, www.paxtonhouse.co.uk, and recommend advance booking to avoid disappointment.
Our volunteer helmsmen all have experience in sailing or boat driving, and provide a fantastic experience for all the guests who venture up the River Tweed from Paxton House. To ensure as many people as possible can enjoy a boat trip, the Paxton Trust are looking for experienced volunteers to join and help the team.
The Paxton house boats are Norwegian made Pioneer Multis filled with 40HP Honda outboards. Anyone with some powerboat handling experience who would like to join the team for the summer is invited to come along to our open morning on the 23rd of April from 10am to 1pm.
